The Douro is one of the oldest wine regions in the world. Wine has been produced on these slopes for nearly two thousand years — a legacy dating back to Roman times. In the 18th century, Port wine gained international recognition for its exceptional quality, becoming one of the most celebrated wines in the world.

Since 2001, the Alto Douro Wine Region has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
